Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, East Africa’s Richest Man and Visionary Entrepreneur, to Speak at the 15th UK–Africa Business Summit 2025
London, UK – June 2025 — Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, founder and Chairman of the Ruparelia Group of Companies and Forbes-recognized as East Africa’s richest man, will join the 15th UK–Africa Business, Trade & Investment Summit 2025 as a featured speaker. From humble beginnings in the UK with just £8,000 to building a $1.6 billion multinational empire, Dr. Ruparelia’s story is a testament to resilience, vision, and transformative leadership. Born in Uganda to Indian immigrants, he fled to the UK in 1972 following Idi Amin’s expulsion of Asians. While in exile, he worked numerous odd jobs in butcheries, factories, and supermarkets to support himself and study, eventually purchasing his first property in 1975. In 1985, with Uganda stabilizing under new leadership, he returned to his homeland and started anew—as a shopkeeper importing goods from Kenya.
That venture laid the foundation for what would become Crane Forex Bureau, later transforming into Crane Bank—a pivotal chapter in his journey toward establishing Ruparelia Group, a diversified conglomerate active in banking, real estate, insurance, education, floriculture, broadcasting, and hospitality.

Today, Ruparelia Group is Uganda’s largest privately-owned business empire. Its real estate arm, Meera Investments, dominates Kampala’s skyline. The group also owns iconic establishments such as Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club, Forest Cottages, and Victoria University—which offers hundreds of scholarships annually. The Ruparelia Foundation, with over 600 interventions, continues to uplift Ugandan communities through education, healthcare, and social outreach.
