The remittance industry is entering a second major transformation. The first digital wave, from about 2010 to 2018, was led by online operators such as WorldRemit, TransferWise (now Wise), Xoom and Remitly. They shifted money transfers from agent networks to apps and web platforms and helped normalise low-cost digital international money transfers.
The next wave is more structural. Competition now comes from mobile money operators, African-owned banks, super apps, digital wallets, global neobanks and blockchain-based rails. These platforms are not only moving funds, they are becoming the financial home for customers by integrating payments, savings, credit, FX, bill pay and commerce.
This whitepaper sets out where the market is heading, what investors should expect from money transfer operators (MTOs) and why companies that remain pure remittance brands will struggle to create long-term value.
Diaspora users no longer want a simple “send money” function. They want tools that solve concrete financial problems in their home countries. The most important needs include:
Recent bill-pay behaviour studies show that close to ninety percent of remitted funds cover recurring expenses such as housing, education, healthcare, utilities and business costs rather than ad hoc gifts. Remittances are now one part of a wider financial journey that spans household budgets, trade flows and digital commerce.
For investors, this changes the evaluation lens. MTOs should be assessed on their ability to build:
In this context the best way to send money abroad is shifting from stand-alone cash-out to integrated, purpose-based digital services with clear FX rates and transparent pricing.
By 2030, the most serious threats to traditional MTOs will not be other remittance brands. They will be platforms that already sit at the centre of a customer’s financial life:
These players already own digital identity, merchant networks, payroll flows and daily transactions. Remittance traffic follows those relationships. Investors increasingly view MTOs as:
African and other emerging market telcos and banks are scaling global wallet and account rails at speed. Key trends include:
Mobile money is now central to this story. Global mobile money accounts have passed two billion, with Africa responsible for the majority of activity and value. The latest GSMA data indicates that Africa processed about 65 percent of global mobile money transaction value in 2024, more than one trillion dollars, and handled nearly three quarters of all mobile money transactions. Merchant payments and international remittances via mobile money are growing faster than basic person-to-person transfers. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Investors should prioritise MTOs that can:
Forward-looking MTOs are rebuilding their proposition around customer outcomes rather than raw transfer volume. The strongest models focus on:
Investors now evaluate MTOs not only on corridor coverage and cost structure, but on:
The winners will be those that move from simple money transfer to full payment orchestration and financial coordination. The next generation MTO should be able to deliver:
Officially recorded remittances to low and middle income countries are forecast to reach about six hundred eighty five billion dollars in 2024 and still grow, even as some host economies slow. This reflects not only the number of migrants but the widening range of financial activities they support through digital channels. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
The market is no longer expanding because people send more individual transfers. It is expanding because people and businesses are doing more with their money across borders.
The original digital MTOs proved that low-cost, app-based remittances could scale globally. The next decade will be shaped by those who build platform partnerships, mobile money interoperability, Open Banking connections and complete customer journeys that integrate transfers, bills, commerce and credit.
Investors who recognise this shift early will back companies that evolve from single-use remittance brands into critical nodes in global financial ecosystems. Those companies will not only survive tightening competition from platforms, they will help define the next standard for international money transfers and cross-border financial services.
