LONDON, UK – On 12 September 2025, Dr. Monica Musenero, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Republic of Uganda, will spotlight Uganda’s ambition to become East Africa’s regional STEM‑innovation powerhouse at the 15th UK–Africa Business, Trade & Investment Summit. Hosted at the prestigious Royal Horseguards Hotel & One Whitehall Place, this one-day event bridges global capital with Uganda’s emerging innovation landscape.

Organised with partners including the UK Department for Business & Trade, this summit convenes over 500 investors, ministers, DFIs, and business leaders to explore high-impact sectors like energy, infrastructure, agritech, fintech—and notably, science and innovation.

🔬 Leading Uganda’s STI Revolution: Key Initiatives

Under Dr. Musenero’s mandate, Uganda’s Ministry has launched a series of transformative, investor-ready projects aimed at cementing its role as an innovation hub:

1. Kiira Motors Corporation (E-Mobility Drive)
   1. Spearheaded by Makerere University and government, Kenya’s first hybrid vehicle (Kiira EVS) and Africa’s first solar-electric bus (Kayoola) emerged through MoSTI-led partnerships. Commercial vehicle plant in Jinja backed by US $40 million government seed fund (ukafricabusinesssummit.uk, sti.go.ug, Wikipedia).
2. National Science & Innovation Infrastructure
   1. Construction of research hubs, incubators, and IoT labs aligned with the National STI Strategy (2025–26), targeting mobility, health tech, agritech, water infrastructure, and Industry 4.0 (Office of the Prime Minister Uganda, Publicist East Africa).
3. Bulamu Ventilator Project
   1. An open-design, low-cost ventilator co-developed by Makerere University and MoSTI, demonstrating Uganda’s capacity to commercialize critical med-tech locally (Wikipedia).
4. Dei BioPharma mRNA Vaccine Hub
   1. A cutting-edge 150-acre facility in Matugga capable of producing up to one billion mRNA vaccine doses annually. Received government investment (~UGX 723 billion) and international NSAs (Wikipedia).
5. Smart Agriculture & Climate Resilience via IoT
   1. Pilot IoT systems (Raspberry Pi-based) for real-time monitoring of soil and weather, aimed at boosting smallholder productivity (arXiv).
